Here are the synthetic backgrounds. To make many of these I use a simple freeware graphics program, Twisted Brush, by Pixarra Software. I start with a new page and then play with adding some colors and textures. Then I do a print screen and paste the page into my photo editor. I crop small areas of this screen and then process them to make symmetrical images so that they make a seamless background.
While some of these images can make quite striking backgrounds for pages, my primary intention with the synthetic section is to make some lighter textures that can be used for backgrounds for text areas. I like to use colors on a page but I think that some texturing can be a lot more interesting than just plain solid color.
Most of them are made from the graphics program pictures, but some of them are altered images from the naturals page. These were altered in the photo editor program. They use color changes or other effects to achieve a decidedly unnatural appearance. I have in mind to experiment with grayscale versions of some of the images from the natural section. Some of them should make pleasing backgrounds for text areas and still allow good contrast so that the image does not make the page difficult to read.
I provide a horizontal and a vertical view of each image because the effect on a page can be strikingly different. Click on the image to see a page using the image in the setting of a full page background. I built these pages because visualizing the effect that the image might have on a page is difficult.
